Metal Pegs Beyond the Cribbage Board — Custom and Non-Standard Peg Orders

Cribbage is what we’re best known for, but metal pegs show up in a lot of more places than most people realize. If you’re a maker building anything with drilled holes for scoring or game play, chances are we have a peg that fits — or we can make one.

It’s Not Just Cribbage

We’ve been machining metal pegs in our Minnesota shop for years and the requests we get go well beyond cribbage boards. Makers are creative people and wherever there’s a drilled hole in a board game, someone is looking for a quality metal peg to fill it.

Pegs and Jokers Boards

Pegs and Jokers is a popular game in the maker community right now and for good reason — it’s a great build that sells well at craft fairs and on Etsy. It is more of a regional game throughout the US and like cribbage, the board uses drilled holes for peg movement and scoring, and like cribbage the quality of the peg matters to the finished product.

Pegs and Jokers boards typically use 1/8″ holes, which means our standard pegs work well. For makers who want to elevate the playing experience we recommend:

1/8″ Oversized Pegs — larger peg body, same 1/8″ hole, more substantial feel in the hand and easier to see on the board during play.

1/8″ Ball Top Pegs or Oversized Ball Top Pegs — the rounded top makes pegs easier to grip and move, which matters in a fast-moving game like Pegs and Jokers where players are moving multiple pegs per turn.

Similar to cribbage, Pegs and Jokers boards vary in size and layout — the same drill size logic applies. Match your hole to your peg and you’re set.

Board Games with Scoring Holes

There’s a growing category of original and craft-fair board games that use drilled holes for scoring — games like Dugout Dice and similar tabletop designs where pegs track points or progress across the board.

If you’re designing or building an original game that uses a peg-based scoring system, our standard pegs give you a solid starting point. Most scoring hole games work well with 1/8″ standard or oversized pegs depending on the scale of the board and the playing experience you’re designing for.

Have something more specific in mind? We’re happy to talk through the options before you commit to a hole layout.

Outdoor and Oversized Games

Outdoor games are another example that we see. When you’re scaling up a tabletop game for lawn or patio play the pegs need to match — and standard cribbage peg sizes are a bit small for a board that’s meant to be played outside on a picnic table.

We supply larger format pegs for oversized tabletop games with scoring holes — 1/4″ holes and 2” long pegs are common dimensions for makers building games that need a peg that works well for these games. These are typically custom orders since the sizes fall outside our standard cribbage options, but that’s exactly the kind of project we enjoy.

If you’re building oversized outdoor games and need a peg that fits large, drilled holes and holds up to outdoor use, reach out and let’s talk through what you need.

Pegs for Decorative Racks and Men’s Accessories

Another strong fit for precision metal pegs is decorative wooden racks for men’s accessories — a growing category for makers who sell at craft fairs and on Etsy.

Tie racks are a great example. Wooden racks with drilled holes that use metal pegs as display hooks require specific peg dimensions — the right shaft diameter to fit the hole cleanly and enough length to hold what’s hanging on them. The same attention to fit and finish that matters in a cribbage board matters here too. A peg that wobbles or pulls out under weight is not a great choice.

This is exactly the kind of project we’re set up for. Because we machine in-house we can adjust shaft diameter, length, and head profile to fit the specific requirements of a rack design — something an overseas supplier working from fixed inventory simply can’t offer.

If you’re building decorative racks or accessories that use metal pegs and need dimensions that go beyond a standard cribbage peg, reach out and let’s talk through what works for your build.

Custom Peg Orders — Made to Your Specifications

Off-the-shelf pegs work great for most builds. But sometimes a project calls for something that doesn’t exist yet such as a unique shaft diameter, a custom length, a head profile we don’t have as a stocked item, or a finish combination you have in mind.

We’ve worked with makers and designers on:

  • Non-standard shank diameters for custom drilled boards
  • Extended length pegs for thicker board stock
  • Custom head shapes beyond standard and ball top
  • Larger format pegs for outdoor and oversized applications

Being a US manufacturer means shorter lead times, direct communication, and the flexibility to iterate on a design until it’s right. We’re not working through a middleman or waiting on overseas production — when you work with us you’re talking directly to the people running the machines.

If you have a peg in mind that you don’t see on our site, reach out. Whether it’s a one-off prototype or a recurring production order we’re happy to talk through what’s possible.
